A useful way to think about money and government debt (for a country that controls its currency).
This is a long (possibly boring) video that may provide you with a new way to view government spending and government debt in a country like the USA. A student asked me to create this after I discussed a metaphor for government spending in class. The metaphor came to me after I realized that I had given a class too many extra credit points on an exam. I hope the video will provide you with a different way to think about government spending and which spending is worthwhile.

A Repeatable Path To Wealth-a post for my students
Переглядів 974 місяці тому
A lot of my students at the university have complained over the years that they are not taught practical lessons that could serve them in their everyday lives. There is a good reason for this actually, but putting those reasons aside, I thought I would try to pass on some useful information to my young students. I wish I had this sort of lesson when I was an undergraduate. The original post can...
Using the complement of "at least one" to solve an otherwise challenging probability problem

In this video, I demonstrate how to use a useful complement to solve a probability problem. This approach turns a very difficult problem into something that is very manageable. This is a homework problem from my website: STATSprofessor.com.

Probability Of a Type I Error: Three Cases
Переглядів 1 тис.Рік тому
In this video, I explain cover the probability of a type I error when testing a hypothesis. Before watching this video, you should be familiar with the basics of hypothesis testing, and you should know how to define a type I error. An introduction to hypothesis testing can be found in my playlists for 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3.
Testing for an Interaction in Two-Way ANOVA
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
This short video is for students learning to interpret Two-Way ANOVA tables. This should not be the first video you watch on the topic, but it will be helpful for those that have had at least an introduction to Two-Way ANOVA. The first step is to test for an interaction effect. If one exists, you should not test for main effects. If the p-value for the interaction effect is small, we conclude t...

Another example: factorial counting resulting from applying the fundamental counting rule
Переглядів 8464 роки тому
In this video, we solve a counting problem using the fundamental counting principle, and the result is a factorial. There is a rule of counting sometimes called the factorial counting rule. It is really an application of the fundamental counting principle. This video is part of the content available for free at www.statsprofessor.com
The Monty Hall Probability Problem from Let's Make a Deal
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
The Monty Hall Problem is a famous probability problem. It was featured in the 2008 film "21." In the 70s, the game show Let's Make a Deal was hosted by Monty Hall, and sometimes contestants would guess which door among three hid a large prize. After making their guess, Monty Hall would show the contestant one of the doors that did not contain the prize and offer the contestant a chance to chan...

Finding the z score associated with the top 5th percentile of the standard normal distribution
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
In this video, we show how to find a measurement corresponding to the 95th percentile of the normal curve using a typical z table. The reason we are covering this example is that the percentile places you exactly in the middle between two z scores, so we discuss the best way to handle those situations when they occur. Easiest way to explain it in my opinion is the contestant should NOT want to guess correctly at the start and because 2 of the 3 doors are empty that means the contestant has a 67% chance of ending up with an empty door which is good. If you guessed an empty door correctly, the only door left after the next step is the door with the prize.

The equation changes as soon as you offer the option of switching, the option is either blue box or yellow box in reality, which is a 50/50 chance of being both right and wrong. very simple.
